FAQ
What is the Difference Between LED SMD vs COB Lighting?
SMD and COB are two widely used LED lighting technologies today, and they differ significantly in design concept and light performance.
SMD LED uses individual, separately mounted LED chips, with each LED emitting light on its own and visible spacing between chips. This results in a more "point-source" light effect. While brightness performance is solid, individual light spots can become visible at close range, and uniformity is relatively average — making SMD well suited for basic lighting or decorative applications.
COB LED integrates a large number of micro chips directly onto the same substrate, forming a continuous light-emitting surface with no visible chip graininess. This produces softer, more uniform light that more closely resembles natural daylight. COB also typically offers a beam angle of up to 180°, wider than SMD's approximately 120°, allowing for more complete light coverage — making it a strong performer in cove lighting and architectural linear lighting.

In short, SMD is more cost-friendly and suited to basic lighting needs, while COB is better suited for projects seeking a dot-free, soft, uniform, and high-end visual effect.
LW Lighting also offers CSP LED strip technology. Compared with traditional COB and SMD LED strips, it delivers higher brightness output, making it well suited for projects that require strong lighting performance and high energy efficiency.
What is COB LED Strip Used For?
The biggest advantage of COB LED strips is their exceptionally soft, even light output with no visible chip graininess — which is why they are widely used in settings where visual comfort and spatial ambiance matter.
In practice, COB LED strips work well not only for general lighting but also for accent lighting and hidden lighting designs, such as under cupboard LED strip lights, kitchen countertop areas, ceiling coves, bedroom backlighting, and interior lighting for wardrobes or display cabinets. In these applications, COB strips deliver a cleaner light output — no glare, and no visible individual LED dots.

Can COB LED Strip Change Color Temperature?
Yes. When paired with a compatible dimmable LED tape light controller, COB LED strips can adjust not only brightness but, for select CCT models, color temperature as well — allowing users to freely switch between different lighting moods.
Which Is Better, SMD or COB LED?
Whether SMD or COB is the better choice depends on the specific application and lighting performance requirements.
For commercial projects, the decision is usually based on balancing visual effect with cost. When a high-end visual experience is the priority — such as for cove lighting, commercial spaces, or interior ambient lighting — COB LED strips, with their continuous light-emitting surface, spot-free output, and soft light quality, tend to be the better fit. For cost-sensitive projects or those requiring higher localized brightness, SMD LED remains a more cost-effective and flexible option.

What Are the Disadvantages of COB Lights?
While COB LED strips deliver excellent light performance, there are a few considerations worth noting. In earlier production, the flip-chip process used in COB manufacturing required higher process control for waterproof strip production, resulting in a slightly lower yield rate compared to SMD. However, as the technology has matured, stability has improved significantly, and multiple waterproofing ratings can now be achieved. Additionally, some COB products require tighter color consistency control, and slight color variation may occur in large-scale applications. Compared with some SMD strips, COB is also more geared toward soft lighting design, with relatively limited power options — making it best suited for accent lighting and linear lighting applications rather than high-output general lighting.
