There is no single answer for every renovation project.

When to Consider COB LED Strips

COB LED strips are worth considering when continuous linear light and reduced visible LED dots are important.
They are commonly evaluated for shallow linear profiles, display cabinets, wine cabinets, open shelves, background lighting and some ceiling cove applications.
The continuous light-emitting surface can be particularly useful where the strip is installed close to a diffuser or where reflections from nearby materials make individual light points more noticeable.

When to Consider SMD LED Strips

SMD LED strips can be considered when a project is focused on a particular lumen output, power level, LED density, color configuration or cost range.
There are many SMD configurations available for kitchen cabinet lighting, stair lighting, commercial shelves, lightboxes and other functional or decorative applications.
This does not mean COB is only for decorative lighting or SMD is only for functional lighting.

What Should You Check Before Choosing LED Strip Lights?

Instead of treating a renovation project as one total quantity of LED strip, divide it into lighting zones.
These might include the ceiling, living room, hallway, TV cabinet, kitchen cabinets, display cabinets and stairs.
Different areas within the same project may require different LED strip specifications.

1. Where Will the LED Strip Be Installed?

First, determine whether the strip will be hidden inside a ceiling cove or installed under a cabinet, inside an open shelf, in a display case or beneath a stair tread.
The installation structure changes what people actually see.
With a ceiling cove, the visible result is often reflected light on the ceiling or wall. In a shallow profile, glass cabinet or open shelf, the LED strip itself—or its reflection on nearby materials—may be much easier to see.

2. What Does the Lighting Need to Do?

Determine whether the area mainly requires:
· Ambient lighting
· Decorative lighting
· Display lighting
· Functional lighting
For example, kitchen cabinet lighting may need to illuminate a defined worktop area. Display cabinet lighting may need to reproduce the colors of products or materials accurately.
In living spaces, LED strips often provide ambient or supplementary lighting, using indirect and linear light to add visual depth to the room.

3. How Much Installation Space Is Available?

Record the usable internal width, depth and length of the cove or aluminum profile.
Allow enough space for connectors, end caps, cables and cable exits.
If an existing aluminum profile will be retained during the renovation, provide its internal dimensions, diffuser information and site photos so the supplier can check compatibility.
For segmented installations such as shelves and stair treads, record the dimensions of each section rather than only providing the total project length.
The cutting interval and end termination should also be checked before the final strip is selected.

4. How Long Is Each Section, and Where Will the Power Supplies Be Installed?

Saying that a project needs 100 meters of LED strip is not enough to design the power system.
More useful information is: How many sections are there? How long is each section? Where will each section receive power? Where can the drivers and controllers be installed?
For example, 30 meters of LED strip could mean: 3 sections × 10 meters or 15 sections × 2 meters
Both projects use the same total length, but their wiring, power distribution and installation requirements can be very different.
If the project also requires dimming, tunable white, motion sensing or other control functions, these requirements should be considered during product selection.
